There is a good book titled something like "Rewiring old houses" that would answer a lot of your questions. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the reference at the moment. Perhaps someone else will know the correct title or I will find the reference.

[EDIT]: I found a link online

Still drawing a blank on the book, though. The Rex Cauldwell book is pretty good (Wiring a house) but is not the one I had in mind

thx for the info. next time I'll know to create a seperate thread.. sry!

I managed to solve this last night

Found an old electrical cord that just had the wall connector. put wire nuts on the ends, connected to a wall outlet on same ckt. and the other side the ground to my meter, and used that to find the hot wire. Shut breaker off, switch to ohm setting, found 1 wire was switched neutral, and from other cable there was an unswitched neutral, 3rd lead on the one cable doesn't appear to connect to anything. Connected the hot and switched neutral to my test light, capped off everything else, & all looks good!

that's a handy pdf for rewiring, so I bookmarked that.
