    Stainable caulk?

I recently had some windows in my house replaced. Because the walls are nowhere near plumb, the contractor used shims when installing the casing around the windows. In some spots, the gap between the wall and the casing is 1/4 of an inch, while in other spots the casing is flat against the wall. I need to stain (not paint) the casing to match the existing trim in the rooms. The problem is, I presume I need to apply caulk to the gaps between the walls and the casing, but I'm pretty certain the caulk will not take stain well (i.e., it won't match the stained casing and will stand out like a sore thumb). Any suggestions?

How about using paintable caulk? Paint to match the wall color.

I ripped down some 1/8" strips of oak to shove into the gaps. I used my little hand planer to trim them down if the gap wasn't uniform.

Most of the areas, the friction from the wood was enough to hold - there was only one that I had to pin-nail into place.

Stained them up along with the rest of the wood. They are hard to spot.

You might want to look at the caulk that they sell for laminated wood floors. It is colored to match the flooring. You can stain first and then caulk.
