As part of the bathroom remodel I removed one of the branch ducts from the main duct in my house. I left the damper there but it still leaked air. I bought a 6" cap intending to replace the damper but the hole in the duct isn't perfectly round and I couldn't get the cap in. I covered the hole with foil tape until I can cut the hole round to install the cap but, is the tape a good enough repair? There is no air leaking and I can't see the cap having any more insulating properties than the tape does.

I had a "finished garage" in my last house that I turned back into a garage.
The previous owners had punched a 12" hole in the main trunk coming off the air handler in the garage.
I used a piece of sheet metal and some brush on duct sealant.
I believe the tape will eventually fail, but probably not while you are in the house.Comment

Thanks Mike, that is what I figured. I will return the caps I bought and get the sheet metal and some sealant.David
The chief cause of failure in this life is giving up what you want most for what you want at the moment.Comment
