The new bath will have crown moulding reinstalled over the tiled tub surround. I was thinking of leaving some space between the tile and the ceiling to install a beveled strip to nail the crown to when I reinstall it. What do you think of this idea?

I've installed crown on CBS walls where a beveled nailer was the best way. Depending on the height of the crown may determine what stock you could cut up. If it's short crown, I use 2x4's and rip the angle. Here is a pic of the nailer being installed on an interior block wall. I size it to have a slight tolerance so the crown can be positioned correctly.

This is the short crown.

Please pay attention to the tolerance C-man mentioned Crockett. When ripping a backer I have allowed even a 3/8" gap, if you have a wavy wall or ceiling, you sometimes need the play to make it look right. And 18 gauge finish nails come in all types of lengths so you wont have a problem connecting with the backer. The worst thing that can happen if you dont leave enough room with the backer only becomes evident after trying to install a piece of molding!
I think in straight lines, but dream in curves
