    Unexpected Kitchen Renovation

Sundays are days LOML and I do stuff together. We decided that we would cruise Lowes for some house plants. Sounds relaxing right? Wrong.

While walking through the store as we normally do just checkin' new stuff out, she sidestepped me to the kitchen sink section for a looksee. She fell in love with a sink and faucet and I thought she would jump up and down and scream if we didn't get them. I hate that when she does that in public. Anyway, we picked out this sink, and this faucet. By the time we checked out it came to a bit over $500, and we never got to the plants.

So, Monday morning I get to out the old sink and put in the new. I gotta say, I hate plumbing more than anything else, even hanging exterior doors. I have a few gripes about the products. For that kind of money, the instructions for the faucet were not that clear. The way the diagrams were drawn it was hard to tell which washer and which "O" ring went where. I've always assembled all I could on sinks before dropping them in as that's the easiest way.

The clips for the sink were not the rigid type that you could just hook on anywhere and/or slide them to where you need them. Instead, there were little slots that the clip pushes up and locks into. They are somewhat flexible like springy, that you can only get so tight. The screw part drives into a plastic sheath and is very hard to turn. So, laying on your back, trying to keep the clip from swinging around is difficult. I wound up holding the clip with a long needle nose in one hand and a long magnetic phillips in the other hand.

When I got to the disposal and drain hook-ups, nothing would line up as the drains are in the rear of the sink and the bowls are 9.5" deep, much lower than our other double stainless sink. I have gobs of PVC drain fittings and after playing around with possible configurations got it all hooked up.

Then to the water supply lines. The new faucet has a longer hot feed than the cold one, and that one just connected from using the old flex one. The cold was shorter, so I had to run out to the store to pick up one. So, the big test...turn on the water and check for leaks. *&%*#@*&%. Yeah, you guessed it, a drip. Not one of those that an extra 1/4 turn stops. I did the extra 1/4 turn several times with no luck. So, I run out again for a new supply line. Back to the test. Hooray...no leaks.

I must say LOML loves the new setup. She's thrilled, and I got a few brownie points. So, next time you go shopping with your other half for plants, go directly to the outdoor plant section from the parking lot.

Much easier said than done. There is something about walking in a store that activate the shopping gene in LOML. Once the shopping gene is activated all bets are off

I had a similar experience recently. Lowe's had a discontinued sink for around 80 percent off...a mere $30.

Somehow that led to a $120 faucet, and $300 worth of new counter tops. I'm sure a new floor will be necessary, now, as well as new hardware for the old cabinetry.

      I'll never learn...

I feel your pain. We moved and sold our house in April of 2007. In preparation, we got the walls painted and some other work done when my wife had the brilliant idea that the master bathroom faucets needed replaced. Why? The current ones work and are "not ugly". Apparently, I impressed her when I redid the guest bath and she thought it would be "no problem, just an hour or two" for me to put in two new faucets.

As you all know, the story ended many DAYS later after numerous trips for various connectors and washers and it ended up costing at least $50 more, probably $100.

The real kickers is that we keep in touch with the old neighbors. Apparently the new owners couldn't give a crap less. Yay

Somehow it never feels like it evens out with the many times that I go in and walk out with an extra tool or three. Must be because I shop the bargain bins!

I hate plumbing too. It always takes at least 3 trips to the store to complete a project.

My problem is getting her away from the plants.

Kudos to you C-man, but the plants are not always cheaper either.....

sometimes it leads to the dreaded "let's re-landscape" chat

That looks like the same sink (9 1/2 in deep) and same fixtures LOML bought 3 years ago and I had to install in our house while state-side! I know it cost a bundle but I don't remember how much or the brand but it was from Lowes.

Something I cannot figure out with these new faucets is the lack of lubrication on the o-rings and seals.
I had to rebuild the ones on a Peerless kitchen faucet because they squeeked so badly that I could no longer stand it.
Then recently an outside frostproof valve that was barely a year old began leeking around the handle. It seemed the seal ring tore itself up from the friction against the inner tube. I happened to have had an identical one that was to be installed in the front of the house but just had not gotten to it yet. I was able to use that core as a replacement but before I did I completely disassembled it and greesed it with waterproof faucet grease. They sent me a replacement for free and I'll do the same to it before putting it back together. Seems like it would be a very small expense to add a few pinches of grease during assembly.
Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?
