    Different sliding patio door question

I notice that Lowe's sells Pella Series 10 vinyl patio sliders. On Pella's web site, these are listed as "new construction" style. The installation manual talks about attaching via nail fin.

My existing sliders have a thin aluminum frame. My house has composite T-111-style panels installed with grooves vertical. The slider frame is surrounded by 1x2 trim on the outside.

Can I remove the outer trim, use a circular saw to remove 1-1/2" or 2" of siding around the existing hole to make room for the nail fin, do the slider installation, use plywood strips to bring the fin area up even with the rest of the siding, and then use 1x4 trim to cover the enlarged fin area?

Yes you can. Just beware how deep you cut into the t111 so you don't damage the vapour barrier behind the siding. I wouldn't install plywood strips, I would rabbit the trim. The nail flange and nail/screw heads will take up around 1/8- 3/16" of the plywood depth. I am not familiar with the Andersons, check to see if it has a nail flange and J channel for siding or just the nail flange.

Assuming the new door is about the same size as the old one, would it be possible to pry up the T-111 and slide the nailing fin under the T-111?

I notice some remodels use trim that is wider than the brick mold that was around the replaced doors and windows. I take this to mean that the door or window was slightly smaller than the replaced unit.
