Removing, then replacing, same w-to-w carpet

I'm remodeling my family room, which involves removing all the interior drywall, doing some electrical and plumbing work, insulating, and installing new drywall. Then taping and painting, of course. Seems like this would all go easier if my wall-to-wall carpeting, which covers a particle board subfloor, were just removed. Otherwise, I have to worry about drywall dust, primer, paint, etc.

So, I'm wondering whether I can remove the carpet, roll it up, and store it elsewhere while I do the room remodeling, then reinstall it when all the wall work is done. I'd have to cover up the lath strips around the edges of the room so I didn't step on the little nails, but that doesn't seem too difficult. Question is whether I can stretch it back tightly onto the nail strips, or whether one needs an oversized piece of carpet to do that, which you then trim down to fit.

I don't know about DIY but I just had that done by a pro installer and it looks perfect. Had to take up the living room and a long hallway so that the slab could be trenched to replace the soil pipe .

It can be done. We had ours removed/replaced when the basement flooded. When you are removing it, make sure it doesn't stay folded for long else it will crease. Roll it up and store it some place where things don't get stacked on it. They will flatten the roll and crease it. I would pull the tack strips and just replace them. They are cheap and I think it will be easier than trying to work around them.

It can be done, but you'll need either a stretcher or a knee-kicker (see below):

These can be hired, or purchased, but I'd relay the pad and lay the carpet on top, then get a pro to re-attach it. It won't take him (I've yet to meet a female carpet fitter) more than an hour and it will be money well spent.
