    Electrical Service Panel question

Getting along in the basement (and woodshop) renovation. My GC states there may be a code violation. Is anyone aware of, or can they direct me online to code relating to my attempts to cover an electrical service panel with a cabinet door face? Can I place a standard lower cabinet below the panel, which is more or less eye level.

See article 110.26 of the National Electrical Code for working space requirements. The NEC is available for viewing at the NFPA.org website.

I appreciate the help Steve. Although this fact alters my plans in a big way, it is better to know it sooner than later. Back to the drawing board!

I am facing a similiar (I think) situation in the new house we are building. The main electrical panel will be in the house since we have a detached garage. I really don't want that butt ugly panel on a wall in our house.

Solution: Install as per code without anything covering the panel door. After final inspection I think I can fix it the way I want it to look with no harm, no foul and totally safe. Kinda like hiding the safe behind a hinged picture.

I seem to remember that this is a fire hazard issue, as covering the panel with a combustible material can be a hazard. Perhaps a metal-framed mirrored panel would be acceptable??
