I have been developing an increasingly larger sunken area in my driveway which is off the normally traveled track. Since I've had a couple of small sink holes on this property in the past 24 years I think that that's a safe bet. I'd like to drive a rod through the macadam to see if there's a void but then I have the issue of a hole which left unfilled will freeze and crack in the winter. I know that you can buy bags of cold-patch but then I'm stuck with 99.97% of a bag to trip over for the next few years. What's the answer the the patch and how large a hole would you punch? The last one took 3/4 ton of fill but the footprint in the yard was barely the size of my size 8.5 shoe.

Go to HD and buy a tub of Latexite trowel patch to patch the small test hole you made. It might shrink and crack a bit on a larger patch, but just keep adding product. Some moron turned their wheel real hard on 2 day old blacktop and tore about 1/6" off the top. I used that to patch the area and it is still good after 3 or 4 years. I also used it to patch some areas of my grandmothers driveway with good results.
They also make superpatch which is a tub of cold patch. Easier to store the tub than a bag of cold patch. I've cold patched an area, let it cure a few weeks and them wet over it with the trowel patch to smooth it over. -
Thanks for the info, Mike. I really need to find out what's beneath the sinking area which measures about 12'x18". If the hole hasn't yet dropped away from the macadam I'll cap the test hole and wait. If it has (ugh!) I'll chop out a relatively nice rectangle, fill the hole, tamp, patch and trowel.Blessings,
Chiz
