Any grey squirrel sightings in the neighborhood? I've seen them RIDDLE the landscape with holes that look like that, implying extensive tunnel networks. The owner's solution was to bulldoze the area, which I believe worked. However, I wonder if gopher traps would work for squirrels?
What animal is living in this hole?

Looks and sounds like chipmunk(s) to me. If you have a Hav A Heart trap or similiar, put a few seeds or peanuts in it, place it near the hole and you will have the creature within a day. You can then "relocate" the critter. I am up to 23 of the little eating machines this year, so far.Comment

Yep, definitely a chipmunk. I don't know where the starter hole is. I can't
imagine this critter chose to start his home 5 feet from my main entrance in
plain sight.
I think I'm going start with chemical warfare (garlic, chillies, soap and water).
This whole area is going to get dug up when I start my patio project so he's
going one way or another. The top 8" is being excavated and a vibrator shaker
will surely be incentive to find new "digs".
