    Burning Stumps

Not sure where I read it (maybe here) but somebody suggested charcoal for burning stumps. I tried it today on a 7" dia green stump that I had to cut the sproutlets off of before I burned it. It is effective - with a little more charcoal I think I would have it burned all the way into the ground.

I am going to make some sort of cage out of screen or chicken wire for the next one. That will keep it closer to the stump. The next one will be a dead pine, so it should burn better.

    David,

Take an old 1/2 - 3/4" wood boring bit and predill the stump and pour some kerosene in the holes and let it soak in, repeat this for a few days before you want to burn the stump.

This might be the thread you were thinking of. You replied to it. I had my stumps chainsawed to about 8" to 10" high, and just piled on the briquets. It took a few sessions. Once the initial flames stop from the starter fluid, it just gets red ember burning. It dries out the wood and turns it to a pile of ashes.

        Mike,

That would be the thread. I looked for it earlier, not sure why I couldn't find it. Wanted to see if there was any particular method other then just piling the briquets on. Anyhoo, thanks for the tip, it is cheap and works. Given the cost of petrol product right now, not sure I want to use kerosene. My brother suggested diesel but I would rather just use the charcoal. Smells nicer and nicer for the environment.
