LOML just bought a fixer-upper house from the late '50s (care to guess who's gonna be doing the fixing up?), and one of the real annoying things is that there's a central support post in the two-car carport that lines up perfectly to be banged into with car doors. We'd like to remove it and reinforce the support beam. She talked to a building engineer who gave us recommendations for the size of laminated beam needed to support the roof, and we're about to get quotes, since I draw the DIY line at major structural work. Anyone have any idea what a ballpark figure for this work might be, so I'll know whether to laugh or cry when we get the quotes?
