Rubber flaps

I have a swing up garage door that has an area on each side at the top that gets covered with flat rubber flaps. They are about 2" wide and about 8" high, and about 1/8" thick. They are attached to the door and close off the gap at the top of the door when it closes. The ones on there now are about 50 years old and dried out, and kinda curly.

I've looked at rubber floor mats, and found none that were smooth, and most were too flexible. Any suggestions?

When you say floor mats, are you just talking automotive?

Speaking of automotive, I would say look at Mud flaps (like those on bigger trucks).

You can get 1/8" thick by 2" wide by 36" long pieces of butyl rubber from McMaster for $8.83 (part #8609K72).

They have lots of different sizes and types of rubber products. If you search for "rubber" you'll find a "wizard" that will walk you though the selection process based on sizes and types of rubber.

Mud Flaps!! What a novel idea. Got to go to the truck store and check them out. They can't have "Yosemite Sam", or "Back Off" on them.

Cabinetman, I think those rubber flaps are called a gap sealer /weather seal.
You should be able to buy what you need from any good reliable installer of overhead doors / garage doors etc. They may have that material in a roll
at HD or Lowe's in the garage door section...hope this helps. eezlock

Hi.

Had the same problem - fixed using conveyor belt rubber.

I got mine locally from a farmer who was replacing his. This stuff is about 3/16" thick with a fabric bonded in. Plenty tough and flexible enough and black.

Ace hardware around here carries all the garage door hardware. I may have seen the stuff in Lowe's as well.

Thought I'd update my little venture. I took LinuxRandal's idea and picked up a set of truck mud flaps. They are smooth and somewhat flexible, and perfect for the application. A BIG advantage is that because of their size, I'm not limited to standard width replacement parts. I can cut these to the size I need. They were regularly priced at $9.99 and on sale for $4.95. So, with the money saved I thought I would celebrate and stopped at a local pub and had a beer toasting the wondrous suggestions that solved my problem. Here's to ya!!
