Depending on the species of the tree, the level of it above the ground and other things it may takes a month or it may take six months. But it will get rid of it and not harm your gas main.

Careful how much nitrogen fertilizer you buy at a time, you may end up getting a visit from the Department of Homeland Security. :P
I used this method on an 8" apple tree stump (after wasting four bags of charcoal). It took a couple of years, but it's gone.

BTW, I remember ads in the the back of Popular Mechanics touting "magic crystals" that would dissolve stumps. Seems like it was about $20 a jar.

I asked my neighbor who is an arborist (a tree feller) about thease "crystals". He's the one that alerted me to the fact it was just fertilizer.
You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

I think I saw a slide of Psrythesymelethesitrtiulveyis when watching military training slides on STDs, along with gynacyphaherpalaids...nasty stuff! I think you can get a shot that that.

I thought the canonical method down south was a hole down the center and a stick of dynamite...

Another way that works is to bore some holes in the stump and pour
bacon grease into them. The porcupines and the skunks will make short work
          of the stump for you.

You wouldn't need to use as much kerosene though...

Now that is a great all natural way to do it.

I should tell you about pulling stumps from in front of my house by attaching a chain to them and to the back of my truck. But then I would have to tell you about replacing the sidewalk and about the stories I made up on how those dents came to be on the back of the truck.

Bill, on the Sunny Oregon Coast, Oregon a state that I have yet to do something so stupid that I am ashamed to talk about it.
