I like the second idea better but just for appearance reasons. My builder wanted to put up the little moulding fake panels in our living room and dining room but I talked him into nicer chair rail instead. He asked why and I told him if I wanted paneled walls I would make real raised panels. Flat panels, which is the effect you show, are also better than just outline moulding shot into the drywall. If anybody likes theirs, I am not trying to say you shouldn't just that I do not.

If you want to make the paneling even nicer, you could add raised panels of mdf in the center of each opening and then add a moulding to bridge between the frame and panel. It would be alot more money and work, however. MDF is pretty cheap but the moulding is not.

Jim, If your using MDF, your going to paint it. Why not just use your router/SRK (for those guide users), router/table (others) to make your own mouldings with picture frame/other, router bits, out of MDF? A little more work, but you know the profile, so you should be able to match it in the future.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.
