Pool pump and filter advice needed

Actually, it's a spa, but the intallation and all the equipment is like an in-ground pool. The old DE filter has finally given up the ghost and the pump is next. Installing new parts doesn't look too daunting a task (knocking on wood as I recognize it's a plumbing problem!).

Can anyone send me in the right direction for replacements for pump and filter. I think I'd like to go with a cartridge filter; is that a good idea? The spa is about only about 1,500 gallons (or less), can one of the smaller cartridge filters do the deed? Would it tend to restrict force of the jets if it's a smaller size?

How about on-line resources? Are there any vendors which can be recommended for cost, service, variety of parts, etc.?

    TIA,
    JR

I buy all my stuff from www.waterwarehouse.com.

I have a sand filter that still works well, but I intend to go with the cartridge system next time it needs replacing.

BTW, two years ago I installed a solar heating panel for my small pool and it works great here in Minnesota. On sunny days we can maintain 80 degree water - FREE! and it works off the filter pump.

    Best $150 we've spent.
You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

I get stuff for my hot tub at spadepot.com. That's spa depot, not spade pot in case you were wondering.

You might want to post your question here:

        http://www.troublefreepool.com

It is an excellent forum - they helped me get my pool clear last summer.
