Please vote on plan of your choice....

Hello all and thank you for looking over this thread. Please vote on whichever plan you like better. This will be going into a recess left behind when a door was removed. The area is 6' wide by 6'8" high. LOML just told me that the room was "heavy" with dark wood colors from future furniture and wood floor so this unit will not be out of walnut and ply
Instead, poplar and ply and painted! (ughh, sadness)
Feel free to post suggestion on design.
Any tips on construction methods are very welcome as well.

Plan A has 3 columns of shelves
    Plan B has 5
Edit: New renditions with equal number of panels on bottom.

    Plan A (Left Side)

    Plan B (Right Side)

The right side is way too busy. Simple is better.

I like the looks of B but voted for A. Four tall storage areas only twelve would be hard to be useful unless you have some large figurines or tall vases to display.

I would split the lower center section into 2 doorsor panels.

I haven't voted yet, due to, ARE both bases the same, as the left doors are not showing on my pc?
How are you going to use this item?
As an entertainment center with a large tv in the center, or something like a bookcase/display case?

As to wood, I do understand paint (grew up in an area with 50% of the houses had painted woodwork, and you can used (they did for built-ins) cheaper wood. But could you show her examples of things like golden Oak or lighter woods as well (maybe you both could be happy)?

EDIT, voted A, but I would consider 4 evenly spaced panels on it, instead of the three with the one large one.

Hopefully these questions can help you and aren't all that dumb.

She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

The base will be the same, a faux front as there is a drywall partition currently framed in that area. Basically on the left drawing there will be three simulated panels and on the right there will be 5. I did show her some of the blonde woods, but she feels strongly about incorporating it into the room by painting it wall color with accents in trim color.

Plan A is simple. I like it better. Plan B has too many cubbyholes. A little too "post officey".

I like the way that plan B looks. It is hard to say which one would look better with out seeing the room it is going into or what you plan to put on the shelves.

I wonder how it'd look if you split the center door into 2 doors. Could make all the doors the same size them?

I will redraw Plan A with the center door split into to 2. Someone else mentioned that recently and I have been mulling it over as well. Thanks for all your input!

Voted for A also, I agree that the doors would look better if they were all the same size.

I would also like to suggest adjustable shelves instead of fixed ones. It allows the unit to be configured to your needs both present and future.

I did not vote, yet. I did something almost exactly like this once. I would do what has been suggested already; Two sets of evenly divided doors below and adjustable shelves. I suggest splitting the area into quarters with 5/4, or better, material fixed into place with all other shelves adjustable. Depending on what you plan on displaying this may or may not work for you. In my case none of the shelves were adjustable and we were stuck with it when it came to making changes. As it stands I would have to go with A.
I would also try again with the idea of a light colored wood. If this area is painted white (or another color) it will tend to overwhelm whatever it is you are displaying. The wood, on the other hand, will tend to "disappear."

Didn't vote and won't... make the adjustments on A that have been mentioned and then present it to LOML. Let her make the decision and practice the speech.... "This is the one you ask for" just in case.

Point man out... flankers on both sides and a rear guard... Got it covered!

In my opinion, you should only have as many vertical members as is necessary for support. I think "A" looks better and will be more functional.

What are you going to be putting on it? For books and such, you could probably put in another shelf. The depth may also affect what you can display on there that will look good.
