I'm looking at buying some wall cabinets to hang up in my garage. I know, I should just make them out of wood since this is a woodworking forum and all, but I'm trying to get my garage organized so that I can actually work on something in there. Those Gladiator cabinets are nice, but very expensive. Do any of you have any recommendations?

Do you have a local Habitat ReStore around? Local Craigslist? Keep your eye out for kitchen cabinets. Sometimes it isn't worth your time to build, if it helps get you started.She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. Several folks have had good luck scrounging remodiling places for the cabinets that are taken out of homes. You might also check your local paper or Craigslist, or even Freecycle if they have it for your area.
Failing that, check BigLots/OddLots or similar (Grossmans?) for closeout units. I saw some last spring at OddLots for $18 - just flatpack particalboard, but servicable.Comment

I got some "utility" cabinets from HD for my basement recently. They were on colesout because they were replaced with lower quality units (probably at a higher price). They ran from $20-30 a piece depending on the store and the size. You might look around to see if a store near you still has any. They are basic units with a white melamine finish. Mill's Pride brand.

I am in the same type of situation... I need to get my garage organized so that I have more space to work on the fun stuff. I priced out the gladiator cabinets from Lowes and was surprised at the total for what I wanted (it was close to $2,500).
I am actually considering some shelving units as an interim step in getting my garage organized. HD sells some plastic shelving units from Workforce (roughly 36" w x 18" d x 72" h for one model). I already have a couple of those and they are decent, and I may buy some more.
Someone else mentioned looking for used kitchen cabinets. I think that may be a good idea. Here in San Diego, there is a Habitat for Hummanity ReStore, but I have yet to visit it.

I don't mean to be repetetive of others, but I highly recommend craigslist for something like this. It's not too uncommon to find old kitchen cabinets for next to nothing (or even free). They might not be pretty, but they're great for garage utility use - and they're probably built better than the bargain cabinets sold at HD/Lowe's.
