    time for new guttters

I am pondering the question. Do I go with standard 5"gutters and downspouts or do I install oversize downspouts or go big with it all? It is about 30% more.

Can't help you with your question but a couple of months ago I had several gutter companies come out to give me some quotes. I had no idea what those things went for now-a-days. I kept my old ones and will until they fall off the house. Good luck.

5" standard, My house has the OLD 4" standard. They were fine all but the very end (storm damage). I could buy replacement gutters, but NOT THE CONNECTORS.

WTH is the point of that? I can patch them but that is a very temporary solution. So I will HAVE to put in the 5". If you go larger, you might want to look at where they go to. As I may have other things I have to upgrade.

As LinuxRandal mentioned, you may have to replace fascia boards or other trim pieces, so take a good look before you spend the extra 30% on capacity.

Looking back to when Mom had her gutters replaced about 10 years ago, I wish I had paid more attention to the condition of the fascia. The gutter problems she is having now are fascia problems (pulling away from the rafter ends), which in all honesty probably should have been replaced with the gutter.

Her house is about 40 years old and was originally built with out gutters. In the 1980's someone (non-professional) hung gutters which were purchased form the local hardware store, and they leaked from about every seam.

        Inspect closely

Depends... larger down spouts and you can get away with less of them.

Ok my pricing with a distrib for custom length 5" K gutter is $1.84/ft. That is the gutter only, made in the warehouse and delivered.

Where available they have a truck to manufacture it on site. Thats $1.40lf for 5" K and $1.53lf for 6" K.

5" is "standard" size & 6" is the oversized.

I ended up with the 6" and oversize downspouts made on site and installed for $4.95 per foot which was about what some quoted me. I have already replaced a bit of the fascia as I am painting all the trim right now. I am going to have new fascia board cut painted and ready to go where needed. I will put them in place as soon as I see his truck pull up. I don't want the gutters off for any length of time because my shop and family room are in the basement.

I like my rainguard gutters. No cleaning. They are not cheap, however.
