What I did last weekend, and the one b4 that.....

First of all, thank you to all the fine members here who gave advice and suggestions over the past 4 months.

We started demolition on New Years Day, and as you can see from the last pic I still need to finish the trim. I've got a BIG pile of roughsawn red alder in the shop waiting to be made into trim.

Also need to finish adding cove above the cabs and light rails under them. Oh, and the kickplate. Actually, I still have so much to do...what's that they say about the final 10%...?

I tackled most everything myself, but did hire a drywall pro. I removed the popcorn texture from the ceiling, but I was not up to patching the holes where the soffits used to be and making the new texture carry across the various old textures.

I also let somebody else do the hardwood (jatoba) floor install...wished I would have done that myself as I'm not impressed with the job they did.

In the perfect world, I would have made the cabinets, but there isn't enough time for that in the real world.

About the only "woodworking" obvious in any of these pictures is the frame & panel panelling around the new peninsula. I didn't make the corbels as I had planned, but if I had time I could have justified a new band saw purchase for these ones cost me.

More pix HERE if you're interested.

    Thanks for looking

    One word: WOW!

Now some more words. My heart kinda sinks when I look at stuff like this because it is just so amazing compared to my work. Oh well. I'll keep plugging away.

You are the wind beneath my wings.

I started a demo project on New Years Day as well. Not nearly as far along as
          yours.

Great looking remodel! I like everything about it.

That is beautiful work! It looks like a showplace home.

The wife an I have the closing on our brand new house next week, so it'll be a few years before I make any "improvements". I'll just have to build some furniture in the meantime.
              If it ain't one thing... It's 12 @#$%ing things!

Awesome. Something like that is coming up either next year or one after that for me - strip to bare framing, and new everything - floor, walls, ceiling, appliances, cabinets, etc etc. Will probably have to set up a temp kitchen in the basement....

Thanks for all the kind words!! It was and continues to be quite a learning experience. I'm now moving into the final finish carpentry and trim stage, so I need to sharpen up from the rough carpentry mentality ("....it's 1/8" off?....GREAT!).

To all those soon to embark on a project like this: What you can't see in those pictures are:
                        • crawling through 18" of blow-in insulation trying to follow or pull a line of romex in the attic.
                        • pulling up 700 sf of PB subfloor nailed every 4-6"
                        • pulling up entire sheets of the floor beneath that to run Cat 6 cable to the basement for data and phone...only to realize that a wireless router and cordless phones will do the same job much easier
                        • and several other things my mind has decided to put in a box and leave there.

One of the best parts is I was able to sneak in quite a few tools (all bought at bargain $$ because of this forum)...all I had to do was write "Remodel" on the receipt and got no questions from the finance dept

At least we didn't have to live in the house while we did it...my MIL was very gracious and allowed to us to live with her for 4 months....at least 6 weeks longer than we ever thought it would be.

                          Mike,

Your end result looks great. I have never done this extensive a demo. I finished a couple basements which would be somewhat similar without the demo. I also redid the kitchen in our last house. In that case we wanted to leave everything in the same place and just replace the cabinets and some appliances. I broke it down into smaller pieces so I could still have a functional kitchen except for one 48 hour or so period when the cabinets and counter where the sink was located was changed out. In your case that does not appear to have been possible.

Debating another kitchen job now but if I do it I will do the same as I did last time. Make new cabinets in small groups and then demo the old and install the new in a weekend so the disruption is minimized. Making the cabinets is the good part. Demo is the bad part. Dealing with the hidden stuff you find after the demo is the worst part.

                          Jim

Darned glad my wife wasn't watching over my shoulder when I clicked on this post! Whenever we dream about things we'd like to do to our hourse, she's pretty casual about demolishing walls, cutting new doors, sealing up old ones, installing new windows through brick walls, etc. She has way more faith in my abilities than I do.

Seriously it looks great, and I know a heck of a lot more work went into it than is apparent to the eye.
