Painting PVC composite trim?

I'm replacing some trim in the bathroom and found that HD sells a PVC (I think it is PVC) composite in the colonial profile I need. It is plastic mixed with wood fibers. The Q I have is, can I paint this? It is awful slick. I guess I could scuff it up a little.

Will it hold the paint as well as primed pine?

I was kinda afraid someone would say that. I like the idea of PVC for moisture resistance. But if I'm going to have to prime it, I may as well use pine.

You can use regular latex paint. I don't think it is PVC but I may be wrong. You are talking about the real light weight stuff that looks like foam on the inside and white finish on the finished side right? Painted a bunch of it in rental properties and it was fine.

The composite can be painted just like wood. It is part wood fiber and will take paint easily. You do not need to scuff it up. However, I don't recall if a primer is needed. I don't think so because its selling point is that it will not rot as easily as wood.

There are a couple types of composite trim. Some comes preprimed and you can paint it just like wood. There is also exterior trim that won't rot designed so you never have to paint it. I have both around the outside of my french door.

I tested some latex on the scrap. I can scrape it off (w/ fingernail) with less effort than primed pine. I don't think it would normally matter but it is a small bathroom and the trim is around a door. Just worried about occasional abrasion or bumping causing the paint to come off. So I'm going w/ the pine.

i replaced my exterior trim with Azek trim board last fall....the stuff is unbelievable. there is no need to prime with Azek, which is PVC cellular. i used Pittsburgh exterior sun-block paint, and it adhered great. 2 coats did it.

i know the stuff you are referring too, and it's not meant to take paint w/out some prep. needs to be scuffed and primed.

Azec is in a league of its own IMO.
