(I understood your point about the insulation.)

When I did use wire nuts I never twisted the wires. Personally I think it works better not to. I will tape the terminals on a receptacle but only in metal boxes.

      wiring

at the duplex receptacle generly one would be powered all the time and the other switched, so it would have one white wire to the silver side and the jumper tab would not broken. On the gold side would have black wire to the unswitch side (powerd all the time) and a red to the one that is switched (sometimes its black), jumper tab would be broken.. If you put in a new outlet leave the jumper tabs unbroken and do not connect the (signal-switch wire) (If you feed light from receptacle)this (signal-switch wire) would be used to feed new lamp power. wirenut black to new length of romex black & connect white romex under the silver screw of the outlet. If you feed the light from switchbox you will need to know which side of the switch is switched (on & off) new romex Black under that screw and new romex white to white wirenut

some assumptions are made above, good luck

At the main receptacle three sets of wires come in, one for the switch, one from the breaker and one to another receptacle.

Do I just create a new lead and pigtail that with the wire coming from the switch and the breaker (black) and then do the same thing with the white wire?

seems that would be correct except you dont need to pigtail the black if the outlet is no longer switched,---pigtail the white(common) and run to lamp new romex, and wirenut the black wire that comes from the switched side of the switch to new romex-this would have been from your switched outlet. Im sure your turning off the breaker before you do this,

(very hard to see in the dark,, good luck)

Of course the power is off, I've already learned that the hard way (j/k)
This is what my setup looks like:

It's a matter of taste but in that situation I hook the leads from the breaker to the receptacle, then hook pigtails to the other 2 terminals and attach those pigtails to the wires going to the other receptacle and the light switch.

                Sounds good, thanks!
