Aluminum Chimney cap?

Any problems with making a chimney cap out of angle aluminum? Something like this. I know an HVAC contractor who can fab the cap. he is making a bigger top for an existing cap. I have another chimney that needs one and I figure I can do the frame and screen for a lot less than the 80-100 bucks a new stainless one would cost.

i had all of the metal on the top of my chimney replaced with SS, and about 1yr later there is a serious rust stain coming from that are along my siding.

Woodstove. Only wood. No pellets, corn, etc. I don't see any problem since the pipe running from the stove to the chimney is aluminum AFIK.

David, that pipe is galv. I am not sure I would trust an aluminum cap on a wood or coal stove.

Why not? Something in the smoke gonna hurt it? Are you thinking it will melt or something? A quick google search shows a lot of aluminum caps out there for sale.

I am thinking from the worst case scenario.. chimney fire aspect.

Do the aluminum caps list they are wood stove compatable?

Good point Mike. I hadn't thought about that. I will do a little more research. I suppose I could make it out of stainless but that would defeat the purpose - and stainless is a lot harder to work.
