    snakes

Had a clogged pipe and when my washer overflowed out the toilet we had a mess. Its the third time its happened. Today, Last weekend and about 6 months ago. Called the landlord and they sent a plumber out right away the first two times but today she said she would have him out in the morning. So I went and bought a 1/2" 50 foot manual snake. Ran it down the toilet and no joy. Went up on the roof and through the vent and got it. Since the big electric one the plumbers used were way to expensive I hooked mine up to the cordless drill and it worked like magic. In the toilet my wife ran the drill and I guided the snake throught the toilet. Not as easy since there is no where to keep the snake straight and it curled up a few times. After 50 feet though it was still clogged...When I went on the roof I encountered whatever it was around 40 feet and sped the drill to full speed and went back and forth. The more snake in the pipe the easier it was to keep from curling up.
Just thought I would post this so someone might save some $$ on a plumber some day. The snake was about $26 and I had the drill.
A replacement hose for a big electric might have been a better choice though because I could have changed tips...with this one I couldnt..

Speaking of vents: Another way you might prevent a problem (and plumbing bill) is to attach a piece of hardware cloth over each of the vents on the roof. My folks did this three years ago - after the plumbers found a dead squirrel stuck in the vent !

Oh man, what a disappointment...I was expecting another story to remind me how great it is to live in an area without a snake problem--the living, slithering kind. I was all excited reading the first line, I thought a snake was stuck in a drain line or something. I am a little slow.

Glad to hear you fixed your plumbing though...
