The big LCD digital ones they have are silent. I was thinking about hacking the plastic off one and making a wooden enclosure for it.

I don't have any suggestions on clocks, but I can suggest a possible alternate solution. You could buy or make a shadowbox, place the clock inside it to reduce the ticking sound.

I bought a clock movement from Rockler that has a pendulum swing and it is
quiet. It was one of their basic movements. I suppose their other models
without the pendulum would be quiet, too.

I am very sensitive to the tick-tick noise, too--especially when sleeping
        over at someone else's house.

Maybe you can bring your own AA battery to Target or Walmart and pop it
into the display units to listen.

We have this clock in our kitchen, dead silent.

It's the Michael Graves frosted wall clock on the bottom right.
