    Refridgerator Compressor is humming

My refridgerator's compressor (I think) has started to hum very loudly--it is a very deep and loud hum. The sound is constant and seems to quiet some when I open the door. Any clue as to what it may be? I have a home warranty for the next month and a half, so I really hope it's crapping out--I HATE that fridge...

Maybe it doesn't know the words.

Is the fridge staying cold? Check the coils for dirt and lint. That will cause all kinds of problems.

I had this happen to a fridge I had in the garage.

It ended up being a failure of one of the rubber "feet" that the compressor sits on - it had cracked in half and one leg of the compressor was right on the metal.

Duct-taped a piece from an old inner tube in there and it made it a lot quieter.

Well, it appears that the OP is not wanting to fix the fridge, but rather have it break completely. If the rubber is getting worn out, the metal is probably not in the best shape either. Either way, the fridge's mechanicals should look fairly beat up. Now taking a sledge to them would be too obvious, but a few drops of something caustic here and there should do it.

Possible it's the evaporator fan. That is a cheap fix.

If it is constant then it's not the compressor itself. If it is only when the compressor runs then I would start looking for a new fridge.

I'd guess its the fan too. Clean it, it might be unbalanced from dust buildup or it might be going bad.

Good point James, next time mine hums, I'll put the lyrics in the fridge!
