    Overseeding

I'm looking for any insight on getting the best results for power seeding a lawn:
    - 5 years old from seed
    - a lot of bad areas
    - clay soil (Suburban Philadelphia)

Has anyone ever use a Ryan Mataway. Was it a bear to use? How about the Blue Bird's that a lot of local rental places seem to have. Anyone use them?

I'm wondering if I need to aerate if I slit-seed. If so, I assume I would do that first?

    Thanks

I used the Mataway style slice seeder this spring. It worked great, do your homework on the grass seed though. If you are over seeding now, its somewhat useless to use something with a lot of annual grass. The unit is heavy and will kick your butt on uneven and hilly yards. If your yard is mostly level it will still give you a workout. I did an acre of hilly/uneven yard, I think it took about 2.5hours.

I did not aerate when I did the slice seeding.

Your yard will look like it has stripes when the grass comes in. I was happy with the outcome.
