    I think you just said bye-bye to perfectly good 52 bucks for no reason.

    1. Any time you anticipate not needing hot water for a while, close off valve that feeds cold water to the heater, open any hot water faucet in the house, turn heater off, and open the drain. Let water drain. Leave that faucet open.

    2. Get a new drain valve. I think they cost like $3 at Home Depot.

    3. Once heater is drained, uncrew the old drain valve.

    4. Clean the threads of any debris, then put tape or dope on new valve threads and screw it in tight.

    5. Turn on supply water to heater. Let it fill till water flows from hot faucet you left open. Turn heater back on.

    Total work about 30 minutes not counting the time to drain.
