Know the feeling on surprises like that.

Finally got around to doing the cabinets to finish the master bath and found water stains on the wall, low where the space is for the plumbing between the shower and tub in the main bath. Turned out to be seepage from using the other bathroom tub/shower. I'm in the process of cleaning up the door frames and remounting/sealing everything.

Did decide to make an acess panel to get to the plumbing area while I am fixing the drywall.

very similar to my recent problem, pappy. in my case the drain in the shower stall up in our bedroom was leaking and stained the ceiling in the family room below.

the drain is now fixed properly and i'm just waiting for a week or so to let the moisture dry out of the ceiling before i patch the drywall in the ceiling.

I've frequently thought it would be nice to build a house which had no drywall whatsoever, and all the walls were actually stainless-steel panels with quick-release mechanisms so you could easily open them up and get behind them, to change wiring, plumbing, etc. In addition, with all the walls being stainless steel, no paint would be required, and any scratches could be easily removed with steel wool.

However, when I mentioned this to my wife, she gave me a very disapproving look.... I don't know what the problem is. She likes the stainless steel kitchen appliances, after all; why not the rest of the house? :-D

If you just used re. cold-rolled sheet metal, you could paint it or cover it in fabric. Whatever you want.
