A pic of the existing fireplace. SWMBO saw a picture she wants that requires making the firebox deeper by 6" or so - whatever depth she wants the mantel to be. This will all be covered (both old and new work) by a coat of mortar colored to whatever color she wants.
Given that, what should the new work be constructed out of? Any problems with concrete block - quicker and cheaper than red brick. How should I handle the span over the top of the firebox opening? angle iron or something? If I frame up a support then put the new work in, will it be self supporting? What about using rebar?
thanks
