    Furnace Problems

    I woke up this morning and my gas furnace wasn't working. I tried all the obvious things (gas and pilot), but couldn't get it started. I had to go to work so I called a HVAC repair shop. Didn't have time to research. The guy called me from my house to tell me that my Igniter/Lockout control wasn't working and that a replacement would be $350.00. I have a wife and child at home, so I needed to get it fixed. Question is, did I get fleeced? Is this a normal price for replacement? Furnace is 1989.

    Any ideas?

      Doesn't strike me as abnormally high. Hard to get someone to walk through the door for less than $100...

      Pity you had to throw that kind of money into a furnace that's probably ripe for replacement, though. I'm in the same boat, I have a vintage 1980 Lennox heating my place, and will probably have the same issues...

          I recall paying about 3 bills for an igniter a couple-three years ago. The furnace was a year old, but we suspect the builder had it running while drywalling over the winter. That kind of dust is very hard on the newer type igniters.

                  i had a similar problem with my lennox furnace. got a hvac guy out and he told me i needed a new ignition controller and quoted me something high like $400 for the repair. using his diagnosis of the problem i did some research on the internet and found others with similar furnace having same issue with ignition controller. long story short i ended up ordering the part for $150 and changed it out myself. the controller itself came with a wiring diagram and i think (don't recall) installation instructions. it was really that difficult. everything has been fine since. that was feb 2005. i used http://www.sunbeltair.com/ as a resource. i bought my part(s) there and they also have a self help forum that was somewhat helpful. good luck

                      Price sounds about right for around the Minneapolis area. Have had to have 2 replaced in the last 2 years in my apartments. About 1/2 hour work for the professional. Really hate tackling gas work myself, and in Minneapolis, I can do the work on my own stuff in my house, but not on apartment buildings.

                      Sure hate paying the price of furnace and Plummers though!! Don't begrudge them making money, but sure seems high these days.

                          The price seems right on for me as well. Overpriced? Sure. But right on what they're all going to charge.

                          I had a similar situation back in the fall when the control board on mine died. My quote was for 300-something, but like WY did, I went online and did some reading. Bought the control board locally for ~80 and it plugged right in. But if I hadn't the time that week I would have just paid for it to be done.
