    Capping off a sprinkler head

I am buying a shed in an effort to get all the junk out of the garage. The spot where the shed is being placed has a sprinker head which I need to cap off. Is it something that is easy to do or should I call a company that services our system?

If the system is connected with standard threaded connectors or with PVC this should be fairly easy to do.

Agree with Don. The ones I have messed with are fairly simple. I think the main underground line is usually 1" (maybe 3/4") black flexible plastic. These underground lines are cut at each sprinkler head location. At the cuts, they place a hard plastic T fitting. Screwed into this are the either: 1- risers (plastic all threads basically) Or 2- the head is high enough to be screwed into the T itself (with possibly a small riser (again allthread type deal)
To explore it some, turn off your sprinkler zone for this head. unscrew this head (counterclockwise) until the head is free. Take this to your local borg and ask them for a cap to fit the thread size. It may be the case that you may need to remove the riser too.

Spriklers are typically connected to 1/2" riser. The sprinkler is male, the riser is female. You just need a 1/2" threaded cap.

You probably want to make sure the cap is below surface level. You could dig down a couple of inches and cut off the riser. They're usually made with places to cut every inch or so.

It's easy. No need to call the service guy.

The only real issue is: Is the site for the "shed" forever ? If so I would actually dig down to the fitting (in the ground) and put the shortest riser with threaded cap. If it is at the end of the run, I would go to the next one back and cut the pipe past that sprinkler head and then glue a cap on. Use PVC primer and then PVC glue -- do not use old glue that was laying around. Make sure all the water runs out of pipe and then be careful no dirt gets on the glue while you are putting the cap on.
Good luck, Randy from Oceanside, CA

Yep, it was as easy as all of you had said. Last night I bought a 1/2" threaded cap, dug up the sprinkler head, unscrewed it, wrapped some teflon tape, tested it, and saved some cash.
