    If anyone who depended on asking HD, (at least the majority of HDs) they probably don't know enough to do the job safely in the first place. I agree that their insurance policy needs to be checked!

    I would go with a forstner bit and then file the point off like MarK said. A close second choice would be the dowel route.

      I am with Larry and trying to figure out why you'd care about having the pilot hole at the bottom of a 3" deep hole.

      Me, I'd use either a forstner or a spade bit with a twist point. I wonder if there is such a thing as a 1.5" dia. auger bit?

        A small 1/2" hole and then some C-4? At least the end result would be quicker and a lot less painful.

          Drill an extra half inch or so then put a piece of dowel in the bottom.
          Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things
