Where to buy wood in NYC?

Just getting started in this stuff. I made a couple of jigs and some jewelry boxes. Bought most of the wood online. Where can I buy different wood species - maple, walnut, red oak, zebrawood (maybe later) etc., in or near NYC? I live in Richmond Hill, Queens. Home Depot is very limited as to size and variety (everything is 3/4" and I need 1/2" and 1/8", etc.) Just bought a planer, but I'd hate to cut 3/4" boards to get 1/8" red oak. Any suggestions? Thanks loads. You guys have been terrific on some startup problems I had. Jim Quinn

If you are willing to take a trip I have a great source for rough cut lumber in CT. The drive would be about 2 - 2.5 hours but this guy has great stuff at a great price.

      Oak $1.60/bf
      maple $2/bf
      tiger maple $2/bf
      Ash $2/bf

Just to name a few prices. The guy Mike is a real nice guy and always gives you a little more lumber than you pay for. I have been buying from him for years.

Of course with a drive as long as you would have to make this wouldn't be a good idea if you are just looking for a little bit of lumber but if you have the storage space it might be worth it for a 100bf or more.

His name address and phone are:

      Michael D Taylor
      127 Denison Hill Rd
      North Stonington, CT 06359-1102
      (860)599-2720

If you decide to make the drive let me know and I will go up there with you. Also if you have anyone else in the area that is looking to get some wood I would invite them along Mike will discount his prices if the order is bigger. Also if someone else goes along they can share the cost of gas with you

        Jim,
If you're willing to travel to Long Island, there are 2 places I can recommend:
        Wood-Ply Lumber in Freeport -
        http://www.woodply.com/contact.htm

Roberts Plywood in Deer Park -
        http://www.getwood.com/contact.htm

Roberts Plywood is huge and has a much bigger selection than Wood-Ply.
