I ran across this at a website of a lumber co in my area in referring to some plywood. They are referring to the veneer cut mostly as either plainslice or rotary. Looked in the FAQ but didn't find anything.
Rotary cut?

Andy,
Jim Boyd's reference is good but doesn't seem to show pictures so I will add a comment. Rotary cut veneer does not look like boards except, perhaps, for oak. The grain of the rotary cut veneer runs pretty wild much wilder than boards typically are. Some oak is nearly that wild when plain sliced, however, so I think rotary cut oak is less objectionable than would be rotary cut maple or cherry or walnut. Rotary cut is cheaper and is all they have at the big lumber stores like Lowes or HD (at least in my area). You typically have to go to a hardwood dealer to find plain sliced veneer plywood and you should expect to pay 50-100% more for it.
