    Black Walnut Table

I have a 12' x 4' solid black walnut table given to me by a friend. It is a beautiful piece of furniture but it takes up my whole garage. I have tried to place in a consignment shop but several said this wouldn't take it. My question is would you cut it up to use to make a nice workbench or should I continue to try to find a buyer for it? It is too large for my home and as I said it is one solid piece. Any ideas?

Thats a nice looking table. I guess it depends on wether you want the money or could use the wood in another project.

If its at least 4/4 thick you probably have around $200 worth of wood. You could cut up the top and reuse it to build something you do want.

On the other hand if you just want rid of it you could try and sell it on CL and see what you could get although my guess would be less than the wood value.

Guess lumber is cheaper in poolhound's area. Not counting the legs, I get $336. lumber cost and this is with zero waste. Walnut has normal higher waste I'd say close to 20%. I'd try real hard to find a home for such a fine piece guessing that if you found someone in the market for a walnut table you'd get far more than wood value.

It looks like you were using ~$7 bd/ft. prices here are similar. I was factoring in some wastage and no legs at a price somewhere between gloatworthy CL and lumber yard raw stock. Once its cut up it may only yield shorts.

It can be real hard to find somebody willing to pay the true worth of such a piece especially at this size and with no matching chairs.

I think if it were in my garage taking up room and I had just been given it and therefore had no vested "cost" it would already be cut up and neatly stacked waiting for me to draw up a design to use it

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. Do you think Walnut would make a good quality workbench top? It is a really nice piece and I would hate to cut it but I think you are all correct I can't get someone to buy it for much more than the lumber is worth. It weighs a ton it is 2inches thick. I thought I could use it for a solid bench top. I have listed it on Craigslist but no response perhaps I asked too much $3000 or best offer. I know the former owner of this table paid many thousands of dollars but as you say there are no chairs and it needs a big home.

Wow 3 grand I guess that may have put off quite a few people.

I thought you had already tried to sell it in the 100s with no luck. Unless you want it gone tomorrow it may be worth giving it another go for something less than $1000 and see if you get any bites before taking it to the TS

2" thick would double the lumber price quoted! It would make a great work bence however IMHO if you have a way to store it apart from the legs surely you can find a furniture project to use it for.

Herb, he already tried Craigslist (at too high a price, IMHO).

While I believe the price is high, I don't know your area. (but in this economy, it still is going to be a bit)

But one other way to list it, at 12' x 4', I would list it as a conference table.

                      Walnut Table

Wow, that would make a real nice storage locker for the golf clubs. Put in a few shelves for shoes and drawers for tee,s balls etc.. You would be the envy of all your golfing buddies.

12'x4'x2" - that must have been a custom-made furniture, built to order for a specific use. Finding a buyer for it "as-is" is probably unrealistic. On the other hand - this size chunk of walnut is too good for a benchtop. It can be easily made into smaller size dining table or other piece of fine furniture. This top equates to about 100bf of high quality prefinished lumber.

If you need a bench top, get a maple top from Grizzley. Using a 2" thick piece of walnut would be a waste of nice wood, IMHO. I'd keep it for another project- maybe make a smaller table as some have mentioned. Or sell it for ~$1000 if you need the cash....
