overpaid for Stanley #8 hand plane

I just got this on ebay for $42 (plus $18 for shipping). Did I pay too much for this? It looks like the handle is also broken. From the frog, does it look like a pre-WW2?

    thanks

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I dont know how the seller can say it was in "Excellent" condition as it looks pretty pitted and rusty to me.

If you wanted a real antique plane (and if this is one) you may have got an OK price. You have lots of work ahead of you to get this to be useable.

If all you wanted was an old jointer plane you could have got a better deal by visiting some yard sales and flea markets.

I was lucky enough to pick up a bucket (literally) of old planes and parts for $10. As I have cleaned and restored them I have a total of 10 workable planes and spokeshaves. The better ones I will keep the rest I will sell.

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to get a user plane for boards too wide for my 6" jointer to handle.

Is this really a Bailey plane?

There are several great sites on planes

But here is one for restoring planes http://foldingrule.blogspot.com/2007...t-removal.html

Use the search on here and look at Plane restore and you will get an encyclopedia of information.

If it's really a Bailey, it should say so right on the front of the body. This may help date it:

No not all "Bailey" planes are marked as such. See this reference:
            http://www.hyperkitten.com/tools/sta...flowchart.html
I have a Stanley "Bailey" type 6. The only marking on the plane is No.8, forward of front knob. It has a "S" inside the tote portion of the plane.
What you have probably a plane earlier than a type 8. Yes it is a Stanley.

Most of the pictures were gone but I will agree that it is an earlier model. The lateral adjustment lever didn't come in until the type 10 but the later models had a rib cast into the toe and heel. I don't think you paid too much.
