    rockwell or craftsman??

I look at this forum just about everyday. I want to get back into woodworking and this is by far the site to come to for good info and great people.
Now for my question (first of many I am sure) I just bought a new sears 21829 table saw. I have a chance to get a rockwell 9" table saw for around 150. Which one do you guys think I should get? I am turning my one car garage into the WW shop.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dale

My father had one of the Rockwell 9" saws in his shop (auto repair, not WW) and offered it to me when I got interested in woodworking. My first thought was "That thing will kill me!" Needless to say, I spent the extra money for the 3100. I haven't regretted it.

    Go with the 21829.

      WELCOME TO THE FORUM

According to your post, if you just bought a new 10" saw, why would you want a 9". There's a much better selection and prices for blades for 10".

If you haven't bought a saw yet, and the above was a typo, you should evaluate your available space, type of work you'll be using the TS for, and consider what your budget will afford. For starters maybe a good used saw may suffice.

That is correct, no typo, I bought the TS and then came across the rockwell. Thought it might be a better saw but wasn't thinking about the selection of blades. The one I bought isn't out of the box yet. Once I open it I am sure it will stay put.

If yoiu had said Rockwell 10" cabinet saw for that amount, I would say jump on it. In this case you will be better served with the Craftsman.

Welcome and good luck with your WW...

I am not sure I totally agree. I would really need more information. A 9" saw would be fine, although you would pretty much have to go to one of the bigger boy's (Forrest, Ridge Carbide, some Freud), to get your blades (no running down to the borg). It would be fine for thinner woods, but what does it have for a blade guard? The 21829, has a riving knife (personal preference), but both could use a better guard (Sharkguard). However compare fences. If the Rockwell has a Bies, or Uni or even T fence, it might be worth it.

There are some differences, but both can be made mobile, and useable.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Thank you for the welcome and response. I have decided to keep the craftsman. It seems to have great reviews and it has a warranty. And just starting out I figure the new saw will hopefully serve me well for awhile.

                  Thanks again,
                  Dale

                    rockwell or craftsman?

I think you have overlooked something....that saw from you dad, may be a good saw to have as a dedicated dado saw. if you have the room for it to be sitting in the garage. I have two saws in my shop, one is primarily used with a dado blade in it while the other one (BT3100) gets the bulk of the cutting jobs to do. I like not having to switch blades back and forth all the time when doing a project. eezlock
