    Nails or Screws ??

Just curious about how many use a framing nailer for projects when needing to connect 2x4s or do you use screws. Was thinking about buying a framing nailer, just not sure if good investment.

    When in doubt, screw it...

Use a framing nailer with cement-coated nails for building walls and other building framing, but glue and/or screws for most other things...

      both.

i tack the 2 by's together with a nail gun, and then come back and fasten with screws.

that way, i can use my 2 favorite things: impact driver and nail gun

If I were building a work bench out of 2x4 I would probably screw it together. If I were building a garage (which I am) I would buy a framing nailer (didn't have to because my stepson has several). I think it depends on the project, how often you would use a nailer and building codes if the project is subject to that. If you have the time and the project is not to large and you need to nail it, the good ole hammer is the best way to go. A quality framing nailer is not cheap.

when doing general framing ie. wall building I use a framing nailer

when doing things like decks and laying down deckboards I use screws

each fastner has its appropriate use

Personally, I can't see the expense of purchasing a nailer if you only do the occassional heavy duty project. Even for external use the appropriate type and length of screw will hold just as well, if not better, and you already have the screw gun. So, I'm sticking with the appropriate length and type of screws (eg. screws for treated lumber). Just change your fastener rather than the tool to suit the project.

Nails need to be used for framing unless you buy structural rated screws (per codes).
