Jemmy, there are MANY MANY blanket chest plans out there, it really depends upon what you want to do and what your skill level/tool availability is....

Blanket chests, hope chests, and Cedar chests are all the same thing only distinguished by size and material. I made this for SWMBO in '77 from U-Build plans. They are full size, easy to follow plans but you may find some free downloadable plans that are as good.

I had just finished a blanket chest. It was the first woodworking project I had done requiring mortise and tenons since high school (1965) shop class . Thanks to a tenon cutting jig plan found on this website, a HF bench drill press and HF Forstner bit set to drill out the mortices, the blanket chest turned out beautifully. Then Wood magazine published for a blanket chest. These plans had a clearly superior method of installing aromatic cedar that the plans that I had used and also included a tray. You can check it out at the link below.

Overall dimensions 39" wide, 17" deep, and 22" high. Featured in the March 2007 issue of WOOD.

Soorry, I don't have any plans for this one, but you're welcome to pilfer any ideas that appeal to you. You should be able to find many plans on the web.

I gotta tell ya, Dustmite, every time I see that roject I just drool. Veeeery niiice!!

As for your question, jemmy, you could hone up your skills with a toy box and get yourself used to making a couple of different joints. If this all sounds like Greek to you why no enroll in an evening course at the Vo-Tec to get some basics down. If the legs look too difficult on some of these you can always go with a straight board across the bottom and sides to give it a little more appeal. Good luck.

Well my suggestion would be to make one that looks like the photo that the wife showed you! Anyway you can post that photo and maybe someone can match up some plans?

                              Jemmey,

I understand you are an entry level woodworker, thus some of the suggestions are a bit far reaching. Help us out by telling us 1) what tools do you have to complete the project and 2) any way to show photo of the design your wife is after 3) painting? Staining? Natural? Wood? 4) and last some sort of $ figure you want to spend on project. This allows us to help determine if you should be using poplar or bubinga, design, etc.

This is a very reasonable first timer project, but we need to know do you have a tablesaw, a router, etc.

                              Thanks
                              Jeff
