    Mdf

I'm looking at plans for a workbench which call for the top to be made of MDF. The plans also call for an edge of solid wood 1 x 2 . Since I do not yet have a jointer I am expecting that the mdf and the edge won't be perfectly flush. When I go to sand this down will it "tear" up the mdf or can this material be sanded?

    Thanks,
    Steve

I have lightly sanded with the finer grit papers. An alternative to a jointer is a flush trim bit in a router. I have done this several times. Depending on how big the workpiece is you can either run it through a table mounted router or run a router along the edge of the piece. If you chose the latter clamp a few thickness of ply or a 2x4 to the opposite face to give the router support to ride on.

MDF is pretty straight from the factory. Wood will bend if you start out with some stock that isn't warped too bad. I don't see why you'd have to go to any great lengths to get a tight bond between the two.

This is Jarrah around 3/4" MDF - Titebond II + nails (drilled pilot holes - Jarrah is HARD!). Don't skimp on the glue, and wipe off excess with a damp rag.

Do you have anything to mechanically assist with raising and lowering this or just lift and move the pins?

Nothing mechanical - just lift or lower each side separately.

The design is from ShopNotes - gets a lot of use.

I thought he meant that he could rip it to width but it would still be slightly wider than the MDF and it would need to be jointed flush wit the face on each side.

well i cant argue with that. before i asked, i did do a quick search on google to see what date it may be, but couldnt come up with something useful. besides, if it is an old issue, i didnt think i'd be able to get it.
