    homemade edge sander

Has any tried building their own edge sander?

I was thinking of building one of these
    http://plansnow.com/dn3079.html

because the cheapest edge sander cost $500 (grizzly g1531).

I downloaded the plan, and from the diagrams, it doesn't look too difficult, but I'm just an ametuer with one year of woodworking experience.

Never built one, but it is a project I have thought about. It would be great for the initial 'lapping' of plane soles. Just don't have room for one.

MUCH MUCH easier to buy a bench model (sometimes with the disc sander attached) and mount it sideways
We have done that on ours
We have a 6" wide belt sander and simply mounted it on a wooden frame perpendicular to the table top then made up "platforms" just like the ones you have on the plans you bought
Works GREAT no need to search out belt pulleys (or make them) motors switches etc..
PLUS then you get a disc sander mounted FLAT for sharpening knives and chisels etc....
You can get them on Ebay for like $50 to 70 any day

I also have the Ridgid, awesome tool. If you are wanting to build one because you think you'd have fun doing it, then go for it! I don't know how much money you'll save over buying one though. Of course that one is a good bit larger...
