    Reasonable prices for wood

    Hi

Can anyone comment on the prices for lumber at this sawmill:
    http://www.innernet.net/galleryofwood/pricelist.htm? Are they reasonable?

    Thanks.

I didn't check the whole list but cherry and oak on that list are less than half what I pay in SC.

Had a friend who used them. Was NOT happy with the quality of what they sent him. He spent beaucoup bucks to have a load shipped about 800 miles. It came to him in a mess. Busted edges, severely warped because of weather and poor wrapping on the pallets.

Don't forget to figure in the shipping on wood "from afar". By the time you figre that in, you may not be saving much at all. In fact, since you're in MD and they're in PA, about 3 hours from Baltimore, it looks like, you could probably pick it up cheaper and more reliably than having it shipped if you have a full sized van or covered truck. Depending on how much you're ordering, obviously...

Don't know if its just because of the holidays but I tried twice to e-mail that oufit in PA with all the wood. Both came back with the notation that the "server" had been blacklisted?? Tried to call them and got a recording without an answering machine that they were not available. Soo. I don't know if they are still operational or what. Too bad if not cause the price of their lumber was pretty good, plus they were not far form Williamsport, PA home of eastern GriZZly where I go at least twice a year. Oh well, maybe someone else has had better luck.

Wish I could get wood that cheap around here.
Red oak is about $4 a bf. for 4/4 at woodcraft and the local lubermill. Theres is rough cut woodcraft is surfaced so I buy my wood at woodcraft...

            Drying?

The note on the bottom is...

Kiln drying is available for all air dried species.

            Add $.20 BF. (500BF minimum)

So is it all just air dried?? and at what %??
            Cut twice.... measure??

I've bought from him several times - red oak, white oak, cherry, walnut, poplar, maple - and I have no complaints. He compensates when measuring for any bad edges or ends. Everything I've bought was dried to 8% or less.

Most of the wood he has is kiln dried but there is some air-dried in stock. The way he explained to me is if you want something he only has air-drying he will finish it in the kiln if you want.

I haven't been there for a couple of months so I don't know if he's still in business.

I have not been out there yet as it is so remote, but I know BT3 member RussianWolf has bought a lot of lumber there. He advised that he was very impressed with the quality and actually resold a lot of the wood at a profit. Might want to PM or email to inquire.

Whats the difference between plain, quarter, rift and spalted sawn wood?

I know what rift/quarter/flat sawn are but being new what is plain and spalted? What is ray fleck?

What is each type best for?

I'm preparing to attempt my first piece of furniture (coffee table) and was wanting to know what I want to look for in the wood I use for the top.

I'm looking for a source of wood in the STL area. Not much luck, here is one http://www.woodfinder.com/listings/012869.php but his quarter sawn red oak is about the same price as what I pay at woodcraft.

You may want to start a new thread for your first question.

Are you sure what you are citing from Woodcraft is quarter sawn red oak and not plain/flat sawn? The source you cite is $3.15 for QS Red Oak which is pretty decent IMHO. If you can get it at WC for that price then knock yourself out! However, based on your original question my guess is that the red oak at WC is flat/plain.

The prices cited on the site you posted seem pretty good. Not PA cheap, but seems pretty decent to me if it is nice stock.

Here is the answer to your plain v. QS question :

                    http://www.allwoodwork.com/article/w...uartersawn.htm

QS is much more stable and in most opinions much more attractive.

Answer for QS v. Rift :

                    Answer for Spalted :
