    BT3100 alternative?

    Hi guys!

I'm just getting started (i.e. finally have the $$ to get started) and had been hoping to get my hands on a BT3100, but it appears that's out of the question (it is totally gone, right?).

In looking for a substitute I found this belt-driven Jet TS at the BORG for $250 (prod. id. 100399037, in case my link doesn't work).

There's a similar one without a stand at Amazon for $200.

Do either of these appear to be a viable alternative to the BT3100? Or should I start watching Craigslist for a used BT3K/3100?

    Thanks for your advice.

And thanks for your participation on this site. I've enjoyed reading your posts the last few months even though I never had anything to contribute.

The Jet is not going to be a real great alternative to the BT. One of the strong points of the BT is the sliding miter table. The Jet does not have this. The BT also has a bigger table, more rip capacity, better blade, built in router table, better stand. The Jet will work, but it won't do what the BT can as it is really just a benchtop saw. I would look for a used one or consider the Craftsman version. The Craftsman version is the same saw but with a few extras (the router kit is included). Just my .02 worth.

      Thanks for the input, Sawatzky.

The Craftsman 21829 would probably be the best option, but at $450 it's a little out of my range.

Aren't there any decent TS for less than $300?
