    MDF and hinge..Help!

I'm making real basic cabinets for our kitchen. Just sheets of 1/2" MDF, painted white. Nothing special.

A few of them are about 30" x 18" so I'm wondering what type of hinge i can get to support them.

I know all to well about drilling mdf and the problems associated with it... and I'm thinking the 1/2" MDF isn't going to be enough to sink those screws to hold the weight of that.

    Can anyone help me?

You're cuttin' it close with 1/2". I'm not saying it couldn't be done. Some of the euro hinges only require a 7/16" boss for the hinge cup. I would recommend going for 5/8" minimum if you can find it or 3/4" for sure.

I recently made a cabinet with 1/2" MDF. I used cheapo Euro hinges which I scrounged from an Ikea cabinet--basically a Bluhm hinge. The trick is to get those fat, course thread screws which are made for particle board. They are blunt on the end and not self tapping, so you have to pre-drill the holes. I really think you need the extra surface area of a larger diameter screw when using MDF. I think mine screwed about 3/8" into the MDF and are holding just fine.
