Beveled rip with blade toward the fence?

I've always been told and read that ripping a bevel toward the TS fence is a no-no as the wood is trapped between the blade & fence with huge potential for kickback.



I just watched David Marks on DIY WoodWorking channel use the wrong technique (45 bevel toward rip fence). Does it make a difference that he was not cutting the entire thickness of the piece, just beveling the shoulder? It seems like it's still just asking for kickback...

IMHO - No, it's still dangerous.

I've also noticed he does not use a splitter! Even when he is not using a sled. He often fails to use ear protection.

Yeah, his guard is always off during the shows. The cuts on his shows are mostly just for show though, most of the builds are done off camera. Hard to say how he really works.

We BT owners have the luxury of just positioning the rails and fence so that our "right tilt" saws act just like "left tilt" saws. There is no reason to rip a bevel into the fence on a BT.
