I work in a machine shop where we drill hundreds of holes in steel all day long.
We use HSS for production work, except on our high speed CNC, where carbide bits can be used to there full advantage...speed.
The cost of carbide vs HSS has to be made up in the speed of doing the job, otherwise carbide wouldn't be worth the investment. We can drill 3-5 times faster with carbide than HSS, depending on the material.
As far as sharpening, unless you have someone who really knows what they are doing, the bit will not be the same after it's sharpened and a brad-point has got to be very difficult to sharpen.

LV site on carbide BP even mentions "production work"

Don't forget about Enco for reasonably priced cutting tools of all types both import and domestic along with a wide selection of measuring tools.
