This is the one I use, HD carries it about $25-30, if I remember correctly. Works fine.

I have the Zircon One Step Multiscanner. Got at HD. It does studs, metal and AC.

I have the Zircon multiscanner similar to what Scotty mentioined. Works flawlessly and accurately. For the price you can't go wrong as it works great for locating wood and metal studs, wiring etc.

Glad I'm not the only one who does that. But atleast Amy thinks its funny.

Amy just got a new phone and when she holds down up volume, it makes a beeping. When we were driving home for the Pacer game on Saturday, she made me laugh by telling everyone it was a stud finder and showing how it made noise when it was pointed at me. Her brother didn't laugh when she kept pointing it at him with no noise.

Stanley Stud Finder

Be sure to keep the receipt if you get the Stanley -- I bought one at Wally mart a couple of weeks ago and needed to use it Saturday -- The darn thing never would calibrate -- I finally resorted to cracking the case and finding the 10-turn calibration pot and giving the darn thing a trial and error tune up..

Most find the 'deep' scanner by Zircon rather good. Better question is: where are you looking for studs. If this is drywall, you often don't need a scanner - shine real bright light at an angle on it, and you should easily see where he nails/screws are. If this is lath and plaster, it ain't gonna be easy. Confuses the heck out of most scanners.

I can't keep one in the house with bateries in it....it just won't quit beeping!!!

I have the same one. Got it for Xmas 2 yrs ago. Used the laser to hang some cabinets after locating the studs.
For the amount I use it it works good.
Also have a Zircon about 8 yrs old but I don't trust it anymore. Missed too many studs...Operator error? Me thinks so.
