We're fortunate to have the USDA National Forest Products Lab here in Madison, WI. I was browsing their website and came across something you might be interested in. They have complied a Wood Handbook that discusses every possible aspect of wood and it's uses. I started reading a few and they are quite informative - especially for some of use that are just getting started. It discusses grading, different types of wood, adhesive bonding, physical properties, proper fasteners, and other things. The individual pdf files for each chapter can be found here. Or you can download the entire thing in one pdf file here (WARNING - this file is 14.3 Mb). A hardbound version can be purchased from Lee Valley for $24.95. Happy reading!
