    router question from a newbie

I am the proud owner of a BT3100 and would like some advice on which router to attach to the BT3100. Being a newbie I'm not sure if I will need a fixed base or plunge router. I am wanting to keep it as low cost as I can but still get what will serve me the best. Any help will be helpful.

    Thanks perk52

Don't know if this will help you or not, but I watched the router episodes of New Yankee a few weeks ago. Nahm said that if he could only have one router, he would choose a good plunge router. I don't know what will or won't mount on the BT, but I have to say that I want to replace my Skil plunge router with the Craftsman/Bosch combo fixed/plunge unit. It's a little more than I can spend right now, so I'm waiting 'til the time is right. It's running for $219. Item # 00926620000.

Can you define "low cost" for us, please?

The standard advice is to get one of the ~2HP two-base kits, mount the fixed based to the BT's accessory table, and use the plunge base for handheld work. Routers in this class have all the features most users need, and will drive even the largest of bits (although you may have to make one extra pass, as compared to a 3HP router). A huge number of woodworkers end up with more than one router (I just orderred my fifth, yesterday) as a matter of convenience but, really, one of these two base kits will pretty much do it all.

However, they typically sell for circa $200, depending on the brand. Is that within reason for you?

I agree with the concept of getting a two-base kit but I wasn't ready to drop that money just yet. I got the Ryobi 2hp plunge $99. I liked the idea of soft-start, variable speed, and 1/2" chuck. I was worried that the plunge feature would detract from table use, but I really don't see much of a problem since the plunge locks wherever you want it. Hey, color coordinated with the BT too!

          An offer you cannot refuse.

Your choice just got a lot easier. If you act fast (before 03/26/06), you can order the Porter-Cable 694PK 1.75HP variable-speed two-base kit from amazon.com for $139.00 after $60 in mail-in rebates. See my thread on this in Bargain Alerts:

At the price of the 694VK PC set you can't go wrong.
